If you sent something to The Gunpowder Review 2014 and haven’t heard from the magazine, please contact me (Vonnie Winslow Crist) immediately. Email and computer troubles have made the review of submissions challenging, and I don’t want to exclude any submission that was sent in during our open reading period.
Watch this blog for announcement of publication and reading dates.
The Gunpowder Review 2014 is nearing completion. Most of the work is selected and authors/artists have been notified. There are a few pieces that I’ve requested rewrites on, and those will be sorted out shortly. Cover art has been chosen – and it’s a beautiful photo that continues the “look” the magazine (established in 2009). I’m expecting to “hand things off” to the publication designer by the beginning of September. Can’t wait for everyone to have a chance to read the wonderful poetry and prose that will be included. Have a creative week! – Vonnie
The Gunpowder Review 2014 is beginning to take shape. Many wonderful stories, poems, and photos were submitted, and the selection process is nearing completion. Authors and artists should soon receive their acceptance and rejection emails.
One of the most difficult jobs is to select the cover photo from the fabulous pictures which were submitted. I’m struggling to choose between my favorites – though I’m trying to keep in mind the 3 previous cover photos. I want to choose an image that is “the same” but “different.”
Once The Gunpowder Review 21014 is complete, it will be laid out & designed, then sent off to the printer. As soon as a publication date is determined, a celebration reading will be scheduled, and announced here.
Good luck to everyone one who submitted work. – Vonnie

Northern Maryland, where most of the Gunpowder Pen Women reside, is bitter cold and the air is alive with snow flurries. It’s the kind of weather that sends writers and artists to their keyboards, books, sketch pads, and canvases. Dressed in sweaters and warm pants, we use these months of sleeping bears and hungry birds to create. Soon the distractions of gardening, spring cleaning, and trips out in the warmer air will take us away from our work — but for now, we celebrate our place in the world as artists and writers.
By Sunday, March 24th, some of you might want to celebrate the arrival of the long-awaited spring. A great way to do so would be to stop by the Bel Air Library, Pennsylvania Ave., Bel Air, MD 21014. From 2 till 4 PM, the library will sponsor an Author’s Day. Thirty authors, including Pen Woman Vonnie Winslow Crist, will be selling & signing books and visiting with the public. Why not stop by and meet some Harford County writers?
Till then, stay warm and have a creative winter!
Autumn has arrived in Harford County with a blast of cool air, the first frost, and splashes of bright colors in the leaves of the sycamores, maples, tulip poplars, oaks, sassafras, dogwoods, and various other trees that line the rural roads of the home county of the Gunpowder Pen Women.
Our members continue to pursue their art work and writing projects, and compete in various competitions.
We were lucky to have a wonderful presentation by Virginia Pen Woman, Sylvia Hoehns Wright, in the spring, and hope to offer another wonderful program soon.
We wish for each of you a creative autumn!
